University of Surrey plans to build accommodation for over 500 students turn down. An application for the University of Surrey private accommodation was submitted to Guildford Borough Council in April.
At a council meeting on Wednesday evening, 1st November, the idea was turned down.
The Council's Deputy Leader and Lead for Infrastructure & Government, Matt Furniss, tweeted to say he was "Delighted" with the decision.
The site would have been in the vacant building space at the top of Lido Road, which isseparate to, but next to Guildford College.
The buildings on site vary from three-storey to single storey, with a architectural style distinct.
The proposals suggested knocking down the existing buildings, for redevelopment of 527 bed spaces.
In March, the University of Surrey Students'Union called for action to be taken to tackle Guildford's "Student housing crisis".
